Hi8 video was introduced in the late 80's as an improvement to the 8mm video format.  Hi8 features 400 lines of resolution in a compact format that makes for very portable camcorders.  The tapes can be transferred to VHS tapes for playback in any standard VCR.  Your older Hi8 videotapes are deteriorating.  Have them transferred to DVD for the ultimate in convenience and longevity.
